The more we eat, the more we throw away, the bigger the problem. With the holidays right around the corner, and our stomachs rumbling for the endless servings of mashed potatoes we know are coming, it is necessary to step back and realize that our consumption and our waste -as minuscule as they might seem- have a direct impact on the world around us.
Cats VS Dogs = Pat’s VS Geno’s
If you don’t know that one of the things Philadelphia is most known for is the cheesesteak, then you probably have been living in a cave.
Philadelphians take cheesesteaks very seriously, and can name you their favorite place to go to faster than they can name their favorite color. Choosing between Pat’s or Geno’s -the so-called pioneers of the cheesesteak- is like choosing between cats or dogs, and the answer is usually not taken lightly.
Usually people head down to South Philly to eat from either one of the places, however, I accompanied Deshawn Harper to have a taste of each steak back-to-back in order to better compare the two.
Behind the Smile: Working in the Food Industry
Wisam Elachkar, a server at El Vez restaurant in center city Philadelphia, knows first-hand that there’s more to going out to eat than just sitting down and paying the bill. He works behind the scenes, and has a lot to say about what it’s like from his perspective.
What’s your favorite place to eat in Philly?
No matter where you go in the world, when it comes to food, Philadelphia is the reigning champion of the “Whiz Wit”. However, those who walk the streets of Philadelphia on a daily basis know that there’s more to it than that.
“Anything within a two block radius from my house. So, mostly Mexican food. A lot of Mexican food. Dos Segundos is probably the best one.”
“I’m not picky.”
“Bahama Breeze. It may be in King of Prussia technically, but I can’t think of anything else. I’m broke. So my parents take me.”
“ANYTHING Jamaican. Anything.”
“Starbucks on 20th and Callowhill. Because I work here.”
“Honestly, I love my kitchen. I’ve never had anything bad at my dinner table.”
“My favorite place to eat? Has to be Baldman…or Continental. Hip City Veg is great too. I don’t know. I’m’ really indecisive.”
“Where I’m at right now is my favorite (Cafe Twelve). It’s not really food since it’s a coffee shop, but the ambiance here is relaxing.”
